Tibaneli - Georgian Wine
"I am the vine, ye are the branches" – with these words of the Saviour and the cross made of vine branches in her hand came St Nino of Cappadocia, the Enlightener of Georgia, into the country to preach the Christian faith to the Georgians in the 4th century. Her first miracle in Georgia was the blossoming of the vine cross. It must have made a great impression on the people well versed in the mysteries of the vine and winegrowing. The Cappadocian maid must have known what kind of country she was coming into on her mission and had made the right choice of words and attributes to express her faith.

For centuries the images of vine and grapes have been an essential motif and symbol for Georgian Christian architecture, repousse and chased-work icons and other objects of religious service.
