Saperavi is an old Georgian variety of wine grapes which is used to produce various brands of high-quality dry and medium sweet red wines. The name translates from Georgian as dyestuff. Unlike other red grape varieties even the flesh of Saperavi grapes is red. In Georgia it is mostly grown in Kakheti. Wines made from Saperavi in this region are distinguished by their dark pomegranate colour, rich flavor, pleasurable quality, specific aroma, a strong bouquet and characterized by a long (up to 50 years) maturing ability.
